The selected candidate will oversee media relations, internal communications, outreach, partnerships, civil society engagement, and event coordination, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders.

About this position

The aim of this consultancy is to support the strategic positioning of IDB Barbados Country Office through external communication with stakeholders and partners, to establish solid networks of partnership and to maximize the outreach of the Bank in Barbados through the organization and management of events.

This consultancy has responsibility for developing, managing, co-coordinating, networking, implementing and monitoring an advocacy and communication strategy and associated products and activities on an on-going basis with public audiences, with the objective of promoting the dissemination of IDB work, as well as to support for IDB’s mission and priorities in Barbados.

What you’ll do

The selected candidate will perform the following activities:

Communications

  • Develop, maintain and update media relations contact list/database.
  • Establish, document, review and refine the process of communicating with media contacts, including press conferences and events, issuing of media materials etc.
  • Assure effective internal communication to all CBA personnel, with daily news digest and reports as requested.
  • Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media, National Committees, NGOs, the field and other appropriate audiences.
  • Identify, develop, distribute and evaluate a variety of media materials in multiple, appropriate formats (Press releases, feature stories).
  • Ensure or enhance the quality, appropriateness of country specific communication materials, activities, processes and messages transmitted to the press, partners and public.
  • Collaborate with mass media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials and share results and findings.
  • Maintain close collaboration with CBA Management, Caribbean Country Department Management and the IDB Department of Knowledge, Innovation and Communications (KIC).
  • Act as Focal Point for Internal Communications at CBA, being an active contributor of internal Bank communication initiatives (Slack, Newsletter, blogs, etc.).
  • Support the Operations Team in strengthening the visualization module in Convergence, including the capture of images from site visits, project meetings and missions.

Outreach and Partnerships

  • Develop, maintain and update partners contact list/database.
  • Help establish, document, review and refine process of working collaboratively with partners, including meetings, joint projects, information sharing etc.
  • Ensure or enhance the quality, consistency and appropriateness of country-specific communication materials, activities, processes and messages shared with partners.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the capacity of partners through appropriate advocacy and communication training, access to information, supplies and equipment and through knowledge sharing.

Civil Society Engagement

  • Liaise and collaborate with the IDB’s Civil Society Team in the Vice Presidency for Countries in Washington, D.C.
  • Ensure civil society, non-governmental organizations and other groups’ representation/participation in formal consultations, engagement, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
  • Organize regular meetings with the Bank’s Civil Society Consulting Group (ConSoC) members and/or civil society organizations as requested by the country office`.

Events coordination

  • Organize and coordinate CBA events, including internal CBA events as well as external in partnership with other stakeholders with attention to the necessary protocol.
  • Coordinate with the Resource Planning and Administration Specialist (RPA) for budget and other administrative topics regarding events coordination.
  • Support and follow up the organization of trips, visits and other initiatives of CBA with both internal and external individuals and organizations.

What you'll need

  • Education: Master’s Degree or equivalent in Media Relations, Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, Economics or related studies and
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in the area of communications, outreach and events organization.
  • Languages: Proficiency in English.

Key skills

  • Advanced skills in graphic design, and desktop publishing. Ability to produce a wide range of communication reports, including infographics, presentations, videos, etc. Solid written and oral communications skills, with advanced review abilities.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Barbados or a citizen of one of our 48-member countries with residency or legal permit to work in Barbados.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

  • Type of contract: National Consultant Full-Time.
  • Length of contract: 12 months.
  • Work Location: On site.
